The stage was
only the beginning.
Born in Gujarat, India, in 1951, Vanita made the United States her home in 1976. For more than twenty-five years, she turned a belief in cultural connection into a life of public service.
In 1988, she founded the Stamford-based Namaskaar Foundation and its World on Stage programming, welcoming music, dance, and theater from India and cultures around the globe to the Stamford Center for the Arts and other community venues. She helped make cultural performance accessible to families while supporting workshops, education, and exchange.
Following quadruple bypass surgery in 2019, Vanita began experimenting with oil paint out of curiosity. That curiosity became purpose during the isolation of the pandemic. A stroke in the winter of 2024–25 continues to affect her short-term memory and has made communication increasingly difficult. Painting, however, has taken on a deeper role: a language of color, gesture, and imagination when words do not come easily. She continues to paint today.
Vanita Bavaria Art celebrates this chapter not as a departure from her life in the arts, but as its continuation. The instinct that once brought cultures together onstage now finds expression on canvas—one painting at a time.
